The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined Meta ₹213.14 crore for abusing its dominant position through WhatsApp’s 2021 Privacy Policy update. This update, which required users to accept data-sharing terms without the option to opt out, was deemed unfair and in violation of the Competition Act, 2002. The CCI’s ruling mandates that WhatsApp cease its current data-sharing practices for five years and ensures that users are informed about what data is shared and how it will be used. This ruling marks a significant step towards enhancing user control over personal data and promoting transparency in data practices.
