Google To Invest In AI Startup Anthropic

Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that is said to be working to build reliable and interpretable AI systems. Anthropic is said to be focused on generative AI technology, like building chatbots capable of generating content in response to prompts. Anthropic has a chatbot called Claude.

This is said to emphasize responsible AI and reduce bias in technology. Anthropic’s founders were said to work at OpenAI, before forming their own venture in 2021. In October 2023, according to the Wall Street Journal, it was announced that Google was all set to invest in Anthropic. This deal is said to be valued at $2 billion and would be structured as a convertible note.

So, the money would be debt that would convert into equity in Anthropic during its next funding round. Google had previously invested about $550 million in Anthropic. And Amazon was said to have committed about $4 billion in Anthropic as well. Google was also said to have signed a cloud agreement with Anthropic.

This would mean that the AI startup could use Google’s suite of computing services But, at the same time, Amazon, as part of its investment, was said to have become Anthropic’s primary cloud provider. So, that could get awkward, considering both Google and Amazon are rivals in the cloud services space.

As AI becomes much more dominant, AI companies like Anthropic would require substantial computing resources, which could make Anthropic a major cloud customer.
