Rajeev Chandrasekhar is the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology in India. In October 2023, he remarked that India would support the development of AI chips under the Indian Semiconductor Mission. This would be through a special scheme to support semiconductor chips focused on AI. AI chips are like smart computer parts that help machines learn and make decisions.
AI chips are said to play an important role in generative AI models, be it for natural language processing or generating images and videos. AI chips could handle complex mathematical operations and lots of data much faster and more efficiently than regular processors.
So, when it comes to India, there’s said to be a multi-year programme designed to propel India to the forefront of cutting-edge tech. The goal is said to be ushering India into the era of a $1 trillion digital economy. This is also for deploying AI into real-life use cases, like for healthcare, FinTech, education, security, governance and more.
The India AI programme is an initiative launched by Indian PM Narendra Modi in this regard. It is said to have appointed working groups of academic minds and industry stakeholders. They are said to have suggested developing GPUs for startups, which are graphic processing units. A GPU is a specialized chip designed for tasks like rendering images, processing videos and training AI models. Another recommendation is the establishment of an India datasets platform.
AI models require a lot of data to learn and generate valuable insights. Since these AI models are data-hungry, there needs to be substantial data to train on. And diverse datasets could ensure that AI models are not biased and can deal with real-life scenarios. Having high-quality data could create a competitive advantage for India in the global AI landscape, leading to better economic growth. And a dataset platform that could anonymize data is said to be able to protect people’s privacy. So, maybe AI could usher in a new era of tech prowess for India.
