Do you find it easy to talk to strangers? If you can’t do it physically, there’s always the Internet. But, what platforms can be used for this? And how can it be done in such a way that you’d be anonymous?That was the premise of an online platform called Omegle.It seemed to gain immense popularity for connecting strangers around the world in anonymous text and video chats. The platform’s tagline was said to be “Talk to Strangers!” And people could narrow down their search to meet people with similar interests.Kind of scary, but it could be a way to connect you to someone from Kazakhstan or Bhutan or Finland or any other country. Users could enter text or video chats with complete strangers by simply visiting the website. It’s all anonymous: users are identified only as “You” and “Stranger”.
So, there’s a lack of profiles or personal information. Users could discuss anything, from casual topics to deep conversations. It was said that Omegle became a virtual melting pot of diverse cultures, languages and perspectives. You may have even seen social media videos of people interacting on Omegle speaking different languages, singing for the other person or showing magic tricks.Does the platform sound intriguing to you? Worth checking out?Unfortunately, in November 2023, it was announced that Omegle would be shutting down. Why was a platform, that had close to 75 million monthly users, going away?
