Will The Tata Group Manufacture Apple’s iPhones In India?

According to the Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, it seems like Tata Group is set to venture into iPhone manufacturing in partnership with Apple. With Tata’s entry into iPhone production, India could be home to its first indigenous iPhone maker Which might just signify a leap forward in the “Make In India” initiative.

Tata had acquired Wistron Corp’s Bengaluru plant for $125 million. Wistron Corp was responsible for producing Apple devices. India’s ascension as a global manufacturing hub may have been catalyzed by its PM Narendra Modi’s Production-Linked Incentive scheme, which was launched in 2021. This program is said to encompass 14 sectors, including electronics manufacturing. It is said to be designed to stimulate domestic manufacturing, generate employment and bolster exports.

And Apple is said to have had an interest in diversifying its manufacturing beyond China. Apple had initiated iPhone assembly in India in 2017, by partnering with manufacturers like Wistron and Foxconn. It had exported about $5 billion worth of goods from India in 2022.

And Apple envisions producing 25% of its global units in India within the next 4-5 years. The Tata Group is already involved in producing iPhone chassis, which is the metal frame of the iPhone, at its factory in Tamil Nadu.
