The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is investigating Google over allegations by Winzo Games of unfair practices on the Play Store. Winzo claims Google’s restrictive policies favour fantasy sports and rummy apps while excluding other skill-based gaming apps, limiting competition and user acquisition opportunities. By pre-installing the Play Store on most Android devices and displaying warnings against apps downloaded outside it, Google allegedly creates an uneven playing field, violating antitrust laws. This favoritism, Winzo argues, amplifies market concentration and increases costs for smaller players while benefiting dominant ones. If found guilty, the investigation could lead to policy changes promoting fairness, innovation, and greater competition in India’s digital ecosystem.
